North-bound trains from Kerala under surveillance
Police surveillance teams along with railway officials have been put on high security alert on all north-bound trains from Kerala since Saturday night following intelligence inputs.

BANGALORE: Police surveillance teams and dog squads along with railway officials have been put on high security alert on all north-bound trains from Kerala since Saturday night following intelligence inputs regarding smuggling of explosives.
Karnataka home minister Dr V S Acharya disclosed that state police had received intelligence inputs from Kerala regarding the possible large-scale smuggling of explosives in trains originating from Kerala and passing through state via Goa to northern parts.
State police had started checking all trains originating from Ernakulam, Thiruvanthapuram and Kochi and passing through Mangalore to Goa to reach north India, especially Rajasthan following the Kerala police intelligence inputs, Dr Acharya said.
The minister had indicated that Kerala police intelligence had tipped off state police regarding planting or smuggling of explosives in the Meru Sagar train which leaves from Ernakulam daily in the evening and passes through Mangalore, Udupi, Karwar and travels via Goa.
Inquiries with the railways confirmed that southern, south-western and western railway officials were put on high alert from Saturday night. Though police could not detect any explosives, elaborate precautions and searches were carried out covering luggage and even dust bins and unclaimed vehicles at different stations.
Meanwhile, the railway authorities have already taken steps to install surveillance systems and closed circuit television systems, sources said.
Dr Acharya said the state police were hopeful of getting fresh leads when the suspects taken into custody in Delhi in connection with the recent serial blasts are brought to Karnataka following disclosures during interrogation that the explosives were procured from the state.
"We are keen on finding out whether the same culprits and terror outfits were involved in the serial blasts in Delhi, Bangalore and Ahmedabad and Surat in Gujarat,��� he said.
Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa also expressed concern over the revelations that terrorists had made Karnataka their base and were planning, procuring explosives and carrying out training in the state.
���We will not allow Karnataka to be made a base or hideout of terrorists,��� he said urging people to cooperate with the government in combating the menace of terrorism and pass on any information pertaining to suspicious persons or activities.
