Non-veg, Big B films on Kasav wish-list

He is not luxury's lap but India's or perhaps world's Most valuable inmate.

MUMBAI: He may not be in the lap of luxury but the lone captured terrorist from the Mumbai carnage is India's or perhaps the world's Most Valuable Prisoner a rare catch from an operation of this scale.

Most terrorist spectaculars, as big attacks are called, have been suicide strikes, which leave security agencies little in terms of living proof of the conspiracy.

That's what makes Mohammad Ajmal Kasav a prize catch. He's guarded by cops with their lives and insured against any self-inflicted damage.

Despite all the attention he's getting, Kasab's two main requests can't be fulfiled by his captors Mumbai Police's Crime Branch (Unit III).

Kasav (the word means 'butcher' in Urdu) yearns for meat every day but the police manual affords him this luxury just once a week.

The Pakistani terrorist, who killed dozens of people at CST, near Cama Hospital and the Metro Junction on 26/11, also keeps talking about Amitabh Bachchan and his movies. But the police is in no mood to oblige him on this score either - their captive and nine others killed 14 police officers just 10 days ago.

But Kasav is given enough to sustain him. Breakfast comprises tea and five slices of bread; lunch is five rotis, dal, sabji, yoghurt and papad; there is afternoon tea and dinner is rice, dal, chana-masala and papad.

A Special Branch officer gets to taste Kasav's fare - because it's feared he might be poisoned. Kasav is housed at a Crime Branch office in a 200-square-foot room, about the size of a standard. The room has a fan but the 12-feet-high ceiling ensures that he cannot reach the fan and attempt to hang himself.

The room, which has a window grill, is the last along a corridor. "There are several offices on the same corridor and he will have to deal with scores of armed cops in the other rooms if he wants to flee," a senior officer said. Two closed-circuit cameras watch Kasav's movements and the feed is monitored 24X7 by officers.

While ordinary prisoners are taken to a larger lock up for the night after interrogation, Crime Branch officers don't move Kasav as they are wary of a rescue attempt. "We want to avoid any risk to his life," an officer said.

But Kasav has been allowed one fervent desire - wearing his own clothes, which he washes himself, say officers.
