Non-proliferation groups appeal to Congress to reject N-deal
Non-proliferation groups have asked US lawmakers to reject the deal.
In a letter sent to all 535 law makers - 435 in the House of Representatives and 100 in the Senate, they have urged Congress "to actively support measures that would help address the numerous flaws and ambiguities in this proposal."
The groups demanded that the lawmakers should "resist overtures to rush toward a vote without carefully considering the far-reaching nuclear nonproliferation and security implications of this unprecedented and complex arrangement."
The letter said the energy, trade, and nonproliferation advantages of the proposal are "vastly overstated by its proponents" and "the potential damage to the global nonproliferation system would be severe".
The letter to lawmakers has been organised by the Arms Control Association, a known opponent of the deal, and The Campaign for Responsibility in Nuclear Trade.
The September 17 letter has also urged that "before Congress acts on the agreement, US and Indian officials must resolve their differences on key issues including safeguards and the possible termination of the agreement in the event that India resumes nuclear testing."
