Nobody can silence us: Congress
Trying to put a brave face in the face of the stridency exhibited by M Karunanidhi on implementation of Hogenakal project on Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, state Congress appealed to the DMK chief not to harm the cordial relations between people of ...
Pointing out that KPCC had already taken up the issue with the Centre and apprised it with all details pertaining to the Hogenakal project, state Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge wanted all political parties in both states not to vitiate the atmosphere by making provocative statements.
``Nobody can silence us nor tie our hands, Mr Kharge said refuting suggestions that the Congress was molly-coddling DMK merely because it was part of the UPA regime headed by it at the Centre. ``We have no objection to utilisation of Tamil Nadus share of Cauvery water for meeting drinking water needs, he said explaining that Karnataka had parted 5 tmcft of its share of Krishna water for the Telugu Ganga project for meeting Chennais drinking water needs.
However, the state cannot remain a silent spectator if the scope of Hogenakal project expanded to include irrigation component as had happened in the case of the Telugu Ganga project misusing the magnanimity of Karnataka, he said.
The Congress leader cautioned Mr Karunanidhi to refrain from making provocative statements on sensitive subjects like sharing of water and border as they hurt the safety of Kannadigas and Tamils living in both states.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Rakshna Vedike activists continued their protests against Mr Karunanidhis statements on the Hogenakal issue and staged demonstrations in front of cinema houses screening Tamil films.
