No treaty could stop India from conducting N-tests: Kalam

India can conduct nuclear tests if supreme national interests warrants it, ex-President A P J Adbul Kalam said.

NEW DELHI: India can conduct nuclear tests if supreme national interests warrants it and that no pact or treaty could come in the way, former President A P J Adbul Kalam said on Sunday.

"When the supreme national interest is there, no pact, no treaty, nothing can come in between. If international situation made the nation to do a test, it has to do a test," Kalam told television channels when asked whether India can conduct nuclear tests after the operationalisation of the Indo-US nuclear deal.

Acknowledging that there is a pact now, Kalam said, "they can see the reasons. i.e the international situations that are forcing us to do the test. On the other hand, they may withdraw. But the national interest is always the highest priority."

Asked about the government's reiteration of the moratorium on further nuclear tests, Kalam said: "This means you have built certain type of nuclear weapons. With that confidence you say I will not do any more test."
