No special cell to deal with Hindu extremism: PC
Home minister P Chidambaram has said there was no need for setting up a special cell to look into activities of extremist Hindu organisations, in what can be called a snub to Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh.
“Right-wing terror, Left-wing terror, terror is terror.... All kinds of terror fall under MHA...there is no need to create a separate cell,” Mr Chidambaram said on Monday when asked whether the home ministry has any plans to set up a separate cell to deal with the activities of right-wing extremists.
Mr Digvijay Singh, who has been complaining that adequate attention is not given to ‘Hindu terror,’ had recently demanded the setting up of a special cell in the MHA to deal with the problem.
On his part, Mr Chidambaram said the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has been constituted to investigate terrorism related cases, has the wherewithal to tackle the issue. “So, whatever is the source of terror, if there is a terrorist-related case it will be looked into by NIA depending upon the significance and importance of the case,” he told reporters.
NIA had on May 17 filed a combined chargesheet in the Goa bomb blast cases of December 11, 2009, against 6 accused, 2 of who had died in the blasts. All have been linked to Hindu radical group Sanatan Sanstha.
