According to data from previous polls, such multi-cornered contests without the two dominant symbols have occurred 11 times in 2021, while there were none in 2016 when all AIADMK allies contested under the Two Leaves.
Tamil Nadu Election 2026: Party allies contesting under their own symbol

- Tiruppur, Gandharvakottai – VCK vs PMK
- Padmanabhapuram – CPI(M) vs BJP
- Udhagamandalam, Aranthangi, Vilavancode, Killiyoor, Colachel – Congress vs BJP / AMMK
- Karaikudi, Nanguneri – Congress vs AMMK
- Thalli – CPI vs BJP
- Periyakulam – VCK vs AMMK
- Kilvelur – CPI(M) vs PMK
Can TVK and NTK benefit from the split?
According to TOI, the absence of the two major Dravidian symbols in these 21 constituencies could open the door for emerging players such as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by actor Vijay and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK). With voters not bound by traditional loyalty to the Rising Sun or Two Leaves, anti-incumbency or strong local mobilisation by TVK and NTK could lead to surprising outcomes. In several of these seats, the contest has already become multi-cornered, increasing the chances of vote splitting among established parties and giving smaller outfits a realistic shot at winning.
Number of such contests in previous polls
- 2021: 11 constituencies saw similar contests without the main DMK or AIADMK symbols.
- 2016: Zero such cases, as almost all AIADMK allies contested under the Two Leaves symbol.
