No provision for secret ballot in NCT Act: Congress

NEW DELHI: Amid reports of L-G exploring the option of secret ballot under NCT Act to break the current political deadlock in the national Capital, Congress today claimed that there was no such provision in Delhi Assembly Act.

"It is totally unconstitutional. There is no such provision in the NCT Act. If L-G decides to go for secret ballot, we will oppose it," DPCC chief spokesperson and senior leader Mukesh Sharma said.

There were some reports that under a provision of NCT Act of 1991, L-G Najeeb Jung may offer legislators the option to choose the chief minister via a secret ballot.

Aam Aadmi Party has already accused BJP of indulging in horse-trading to form the government in Delhi while saffron party said that such allegations were nothing new for AAP, which didn't have any proof to substantiate its several claims.

AAP had won 28 seats in its debut assembly elections and had later formed the government with outside support from eight Congress MLAs.

The government led by Arvind Kejriwal had resigned on February 14 after the party's pet project, the Janlokpal Bill, could not be passed due to opposition from BJP and Congress.

President's Rule was imposed in Delhi on February 17. The Lt Governor had not favoured dissolution of the 70-member Delhi assembly as recommended by the Council of Ministers headed by Kejriwal and kept the assembly in suspended animation.
