No plan to take over Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple: Govt
Kerala Government has no plans to take over the administration of famed Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple here now under the management of erstwhile Travancore Royal family, cooperation and devaswom minister G Sudhakaran said today.
However, the government wanted to set up a committee with a prominent place for the royal family to manage the temple affairs in the wake of a lower court order directing the government to take over the administration of the temple, he told reporters here.
At present the family and the erstwhile Maharaja nominate members to the temple committee that manages the affairs, he said adding this system would go.
The government had filed an affidavit in the court in a connected case, he said. Further details would be worked out later, he said.
The government pays a grant of Rs 10 lakh per annum to the temple for its activities.
Rejecting the BJP allegation that the government was planning to take over the temple, he said its only intention was to carry forward the affairs of the temple in a democratic and transparent manner.
He also said a total of Rs 4.74 crore would be given as grants to various temples for renovation.
