NEW DELHI: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise will not be implemented in Bihar, the state chief minister Nitish Kumar assured his party’s vice-president Prashant Kishor on Saturday.

Kishor is said to have offered his resignation during his meeting with the Chief Minister on Saturday after taking a contrary position publicly to the party’s stand on the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which has now received the assent of the President. The JD (U) voted in favour of the bill in Parliament while Kishor said the bill was unconstitutional.

In Saturday’s meeting, Kishor is said to have impressed upon Kumar that CAB’s combination with NRC would be discriminatory against the minorities, on which Kumar is said to have assured him that NRC will not be implemented in Bihar and that the CM would publicly take this position in a few days. The CAB, now being a law, will be examined by the Supreme Court next week, the duo are said to have discussed.
