No legal obligation for India in Indo-US nuke deal: Kakodkar

Kakodkar said that there is no legal obligation for India in Indo-US nuke deal.

PUNE: Wait and watch. Now it is a matter of a few days, said Atomic Energy Commission Chairman (AEC) Anil Kakodkar on Monday when asked if the Indo-US civil nuclear deal could encounter last minute hiccups during its ensuing US congressional passage.

"It is very clear. We have to go by the 1-2-3 agreement which speaks for itself. There is no legal obligation for India," Kakodkar said on the sidelines of a function here.

If need arise the US could help India acquire nuclear fuel from other NSG countries under the provisions of 1-2-3,he said, adding that we should be able to continue the operations of the reactors that are already started.

Earlier, delivering a lecture on Energy Security at the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Kakodkar said, there is no hindrance in keeping our strategic options open under the civil nuclear cooperation deal with the US.

An early availability of uranium is important from the point of view of reducing long term dependence on import of energy, he noted.

India is also not lagging behind in fusion technology and is considered an important player in that arena, Kakodkar said.

On the use of Thorium as nuclear fuel, Kakodkar said, India had mastered the Thorium technology but a sequential implementation of that option is necessary.

"We must enhance our experience with Thorium by increasing scale of its use," the AEC chief said.
