'No inclination to use force against opposition'

West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Wednesday said his government will not succumb to any obstacles in carrying out its drive to industrialise the state.

KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Wednesday said his government will not succumb to any obstacles in carrying out its drive to industrialise the state.

He, however, sought cooperation from opposition parties in realising his mission. Addressing a motion moved by opposition leader Partha Chattarjee in the state legislature, the chief minister said his government had no intention to use the police and administration to suppress political movements by opposition parties.

“I neither have the time nor the inclination to use the police or administration against you (opposition parties)”, the chief minister said.

The chief minister also dismissed the Trinamool Congress’ allegation that there had been police excess at Singur on September 25 when Mamata Banerjee had been holding demonstrations there.

“You (opposition parties) have perhaps forgotten that the first decision the Left Front government had taken after it came to power in 1977 was to release unconditionally all political prisoners who had been lodged in different jails in West Bengal,” Mr Bhattacharjee said, justifying his claim that there was no police excess in West Bengal.

“The same government is in power in the state and cannot allow police excesses on democratic initiatives,” Mr Bhattacharjee said. The chief minister, at the same time, said the small car unit by the Tatas will come up at Singur and “no one should have any confusion over this.”

“What do you want from our government? Don’t you want the Tatas, Salim and others to come to our state? You can rest assured this will never happen if you continue to disrupt government initiatives to industrialise West Bengal,” the chief minister told the opposition benches.

Ironically, the Left Front on Wednesday held a massive gathering at Singur in which several Front leaders who had once raised questions about the industrialisation drive, spoke in favour.

Left Front chairman and CPI(M) politburo member Biman Bose who also addressed the gathering said, “We want industry in West Bengal and we will not allow any force to oppose our government’s drive to industrialise the state.”
