No going back on industrialisation: Buddha

Amidst the talks between Jyoti Basu and Mamata Banerjee on Nandigram and land acquisition for the Tata Motors' car project, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee today said his government will not retreat from industrialisation policy.

KOLKATA: Amidst the talks between Jyoti Basu and Mamata Banerjee on Nandigram and land acquisition for the Tata Motors' car project, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee today said his government will not retreat from industrialisation policy.

"We don't want war with the opposition. We are ready for talks and accept valid arguments. There is no going back from industrialisation," Bhattacherjee told a rally of government employees and the workers of the public and private sector units.

"We want a consensus on the basis of discussions between the opposition and the government to continue the industrialisation without any hindrance," he said.

"Industrilisation is not in the interest of a party. It is in the interest of the state as a whole and to solve the problem of growing unemployment," he said.

Bhattacherjee later responding to a question from reporters refused to comment on the Basu-Mamata talks.

Defending the Tata Motor's Singur car project and the proposed petrochemical hub, Bhattacherjee urged opposition parties to give up their resistance to the projects saying that when implemented they would create big employment opportunities.

"At least 4,000 people will get employment when the Tata Motors's small car project will be implemented. We will also go ahead with the plan to set up the petrochemical hub. There is no going back from it. The project when implemented will employ one lakh people," he said.
