Chandigarh:Facing ire from within the Congress for targeting chief minister Amarinder Singh, Navjot Singh Sidhu may once again get away lightly for alleged indiscipline.

His colleagues have not formally complained to the party brass about his remarks criticising the state leadership over inaction by the state government in cases of desecration of the holy book of Sikhs during the Akali Dal-BJP regime.

“There are no formal complaints made by any party men against Navjot Sidhu and a report is being sought from Congress chief Sunil Jakhar to look into the veracity of media reports,” Congress’ Punjab incharge Asha Kumari told ET.

Kumari said that Sidhu did not face charges of indiscipline or complaints within the party. The process for the report, which will be sent to Congress president Rahul Gandhi, is likely to be initiated after the results of Lok Sabha polls are out, she said.

Cabinet ministers in Punjab came out in support of the CM and lambasted Sidhu for his utterances on the state government. Sidhu has also been vocal on the issue of not giving ticket to his wife and sidelining him from the campaign. The rift with the CM was perceptible when Sidhu overlooked the latter’s advice against visiting Pakistan for Imran Khan’s government formation.

“It is unfortunate as his statements are hurting the interest of the party. In order to remain an asset in the Congress, Sidhu needs to toe the party’s line,” state minister Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa told ET.

“Sidhu is sincere in his allegations and he is being targeted to make a scapegoat for the LS poll results that are sure to fall short of expectations of what Amarinder Singh has been claiming,” leader of the opposition in Punjab Assembly, HS Cheema of Aam Aadmi Party said
