No final decision on caste census yet: Government

Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken informed Rajya Sabha that the matter was under consideration of the Union Cabinet.

NEW DELHI: The Government has not taken a final decision on inclusion of caste in the ongoing census exercise.

Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken informed Rajya Sabha that the matter was under consideration of the Union Cabinet.

"The Union Cabinet has desired that the matter might in the first instance be considered by the Group of Ministers. The GoM under the chairmanship of Finance Minister (Pranab Mukherjee) met three times on July one, August 11 and 19. The recommendations of the GoM will be placed before the Union Cabinet for a final decision," he said replying to a written question.
