No decision on SP, RJD joining UPA: Sources

Reports suggest a section of the Congress Working Committee wants RJD and SP be kept out of the next UPA govt. CMs who have held on to their strongholds

NEW DELHI: The Congress core group met on Sunday to discuss the political situation and issues related to government formation following the impressive performance of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the Lok Sabha elections.

The strategy meeting, held at Seven Race Course Road, was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her political secretary Ahmed Patel and defence minister AK Antony amongst others, party sources said.

A section of Congress leadership wants RJD and Samajwadi Party to be kept out of government, say sources after CWC meet. The UPA is short of a dozen seats to reach the majority mark of 272 in Parliament.

Rahul Gandhi's role in the election campaign was praised at CWC meet, says party leader Karan Singh.

CWC also passed two resolutions - one thanking electorate for the decisive mandate, and the other thanking Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi.

Another meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) is scheduled to take stock of the situation following the poll results.

The sources said that after the CWC meeting, Congress leadership would hold discussions with the allies to finalize the details of government formation.
