No cops to escort '93 blasts accused to court; policemen away on IPL security duty

MUMBAI: For the Mumbai police, stepping up security during IPL matches in the city seems to be more important than ensuring that the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts trial goes off smoothly.

With most policemen away on IPL security duty, Feroze Khan, the ’93 blasts accused who is actually lodged at the Arthur Road jail but erroneously mentioned on the most-wanted list submitted to Pakistan, could not be produced in court on time on Monday morning . Undertrial’s are usually escorted from their jails to courts by the local arms unit personnel. However, there was no policeman available on Monday to escort Khan to court. He was finally sent there around 5 in the evening.

Incidentally, it was not only Khan but hundreds of other undertrial’s who could not attend their hearings as no policeman was there to accompany them.

Khan is accused of visiting Pakistan for firearms training and helping other accused smuggle goods before the blasts. His lawyer, advocate Farhana Shah, also kept waiting till noon but the court was later told that Khan could not be sent for a hearing because of the shortage in manpower. Tada court judge S T Mahajan has now given another date for his hearing on June 13.

“Initially, it was said that as there was no one to escort Khan, he could not be brought to court. Later , he was sent there in the evening. After marking his presence, the court has given a new date for his hearing, which will be next held on June,” said Shah. On a list recently submitted to Islamabad, Khan was erroneously named as the 24th “most-wanted” suspect who have taken refuge in Pakistan. However , he has been at the Arthur Road prison since February last year.
