No change in uniform till 2018, says RSS

All those wanting to see Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteers in full trousers instead of khaki shorts will have to wait till 2018.

MUMBAI: All those wanting to see Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteers in full trousers instead of khaki shorts will have to wait a bit longer for the much talked about sartorial change. Till 2018 to be precise.

Rebutting earlier reports saying that the RSS has decided to change its ganavesh (uniform) to full trousers, the Sangh ruled out any change in this matter.

Recent reports about the change in the RSS uniform are totally wrong. There wont be any change for the next ten years, RSS All India Prachar Pramukh Manmohan Vaidya told in an informal chat.

Its not that the Sangh authorities unilaterally dismissed the uniform change suggestion. The Sangh receives many suggestions, and uniform change is the most common one, Mr Vaidya said. Therefore the Sangh appointed a ten-member committee to review the suggestion. The committee presented its report before the Pratinidhi Sabha that was held at Vrindavan a couple of months ago.

The Sabha discussed the report in detail and arrived at a unanimous decision that the change in ganavesh is not needed at this point of time, Mr Vaidya said. So, at least for the next 10 years, Sangh volunteers will be wearing the same uniform.

Mr Vaidya dismissed reports that the age-old ganavesh has been preventing youths from joining the RSS. Contrary to reports in the media, the number of daily shakhas is around 50,000 across the country and the total number of registered volunteers has touched 50 lakhs. A majority of the volunteers are in the prime of their youth, Mr Vaidya said.

He made an interesting observation. Most of the youths joining us have significant interests in social issues. Politics doesnt attract them. The RSS continues to get volunteers from all walks of life, including highly educated professionals. In places like Bangalore and Pune, a large number of IT professionals have shown great interest in the Sangh activity, he said.

Though the cities face space crunch, the Sangh keeps trying to stick to its schedule of shakhas. RSS shakhas, which are held twice a day, consists of mainly volunteers gathering for physical training where the organisation tries to imbibe the Sangh ideology.
