Nitish's janta durbar has his legislators worried

PATNA: The legislators in Bihar are unhappy with CM Nitish Kumar. Their grievance being that the people have taken a liking the chief minister’s janta durbar and are not approaching them.

“We have become redundant now or you can say we are facing unemployment. Why should the people come to us when they can easily approach the chief minister, complained a JD (U) MLA. “Earlier, we were much in demand with the people running for us for seeking our assistance and help,” the MLA told ET.

Admittedly, the chief minister is very passionate about the junta durbars which he has been holding every week on Monday at 1 Anne Marg, the official residence of the chief minister. The response is quite encouraging as people in large numbers can be seen wending their way to the janta durbars.

"It is a certainly a big hit with the people who have the luxury of meeting the chief minister in person with their problems. Some of them get instant justice with the intervention of the chief minister. There is a system in place which monitors the progress of the cases forwarded by the people to the CM,” the principal secretary to the CM, RCP Sinha told ET. In fact, said Mr Sinha, a cell headed by the chief secretary has been set up for the monitoring job."

"Enamoured by the success of the janta durbars, the CM has now decided to hold such durbars away from the state capital also. The Janta durbar experiment will now continue in other districts. In fact, he held one such janta durbar in Purnea on Thursday."

The Purnea exercise was a big success as no less than 5000 thousand people turned up for the occasion” claimed Mr Sinha. According to Sinha, janta durbar in one district will be held every month preferably on Thursday. In Patna however, he said, it will be held every week on Monday.

Interestingly, Lalu when he began his innings in the role of the chief minister in 1990 also started the janta durbar experiment. But he however later discontinued with the practice. But Nitish Kumar is firm on continuing with this experiment which he prefers to call it as “ Mukhya Mantri Janta Ke Darbar Mein”.
