Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant joins JD(U), vows to carry forward father’s legacy

Nishant Kumar, the son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on Sunday formally joined the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), marking his official entry into politics.

Nishant joined the party in the presence of senior JD(U) leaders including MPs Sanjay Jha and Rajiv Ranjan Singh, along with other party workers and supporters.

Addressing party members after joining, Nishant expressed gratitude for the support he received and said he would strive to live up to expectations.


“I thank everyone. I will try to live up to the trust you all have placed in me. I, the entire Bihar and the entire country are proud of what my father has done in the last 20 years,” he said.

His entry into the JD(U) comes at a time when political attention in the state has been focused on the future leadership of the party. Nishant has largely stayed away from active politics until now, despite repeated speculation about his possible debut.

His father, Nitish Kumar, one of India’s longest-serving chief ministers, has led Bihar through multiple terms since 2005 and remains a central figure in the state’s political landscape. Known for his focus on governance reforms, infrastructure development and social welfare initiatives, Nitish has shaped Bihar’s politics for nearly two decades.

Recently, Nitish Kumar filed his nomiation for the Rajya Sabha, a development widely seen as part of a broader political transition within the party.

Party leaders welcomed Nishant’s entry, expressing confidence that he would strengthen the organisation and help carry forward the legacy associated with Nitish Kumar’s governance in the stateWith his joining, JD(U) workers said they hope Nishant will gradually take on a more visible role in the party’s political and organisational activities in Bihar.
