Nirbhaya documentary: Parliament demands actions against officials permitting shoot

NEW DELHI: The shooting of a documentary on Nirbhaya gangrape convict Mukesh Singh inside Tihar Jail rocked both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday with members demanding swift and appropriate action against the authorities who gave permission and alleging that the mindset of the society is largely tilted against women as it holds them responsible for crimes committed against them.

The issue figured in the Rajya Sabha with several members, cutting across party lines, expressed outrage overthepermissiongranted for shooting such a documentary. Celebrities like Jaya Bachchan, Javed Akhtar and businesswoman Anu Agha were in the forefront in condemning crimes against women.

KC Tyagi (JD-U) had given a notice for suspension of Question Hour to discuss the issue. Bachchan said three years have passed since the heinous crime against Nirbhaya took place and yet the guilty have not been punished. MoS for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi tried to placate the agitating members by insisting that government has acted by lodging FIRs and taking the matter to court.

Not satisfied, women members trooped into the Well of the House and forced a 15-minute adjournment of the House.
