Nilekani meets telecom secy for cooperation

Unique Identification Authority of India Chairman Nandan Nilekani on Thursday met Telecom Secretary Siddarth Behura seeking co-operation from mobile companies in sharing their subscriber data for preparing the ID cards.

NEW DELHI: Unique Identification Authority of India Chairman Nandan Nilekani on Thursday met Telecom Secretary Siddarth Behura seeking co-operation from mobile companies in sharing their subscriber data for preparing the ID cards.

CEOs of all the mobile companies were also present in the meeting and they expressed their willingness to co-operate with the project. Additional Telecom Secretary Subodh Kumar also attended the meeting among others.

A Vodafone Essar official said the meeting was successful and his company has offered all the help to the authority.

The UIDAI was established to provide a unique number to every resident in the country. The unique number is expected help identify targetted benefiaries of social security services, and ensure internal security.

DoT, along with the various telecom service providers, is a major stakeholder in this process.

There are 480 million telephone subscribers in the country at the moment. Taking margin of error into account, the telecom database is an authenticated database of people in terms of identity and address is concerned.
