NHRC to meet UP officials on Jan 17 over Muzaffarnagar riots

LUCKNOW: NHRC will meet senior Uttar Pradesh government officials on January 17 to share its findings after making three visits to communal violence-hit Muzaffarnagar, Commission Chairman Justice KG Balakrishnan said today.

"Teams of the National Human Rights Commission visited Muzaffarnagar thrice and their findings, observations and recommendations will be shared with senior state government officials during a meeting with them on January 17," he said.

Balakrishnan said this while inaugurating a three-day camp of the NHRC here.

UP Chief Secretary Javed Usmani, who was also present, said protection and promotion of human rights was the first responsibility of any civilised society.

The Uttar Pradesh administration has always taken the advices, directions and recommendations of NHRC very seriously and it will continue to do so to ensure compliance of its directives at the earliest, he said.
