NHRC asks Delhi to pay Rs 5 lakh to sexual assault victim

TheNHRC today directed the Delhi government to pay Rs 5 lakh as monetary relief to a minor who was sexually harassed.

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today directed the Delhi government to pay Rs 5 lakh as monetary relief to a minor, who was sexually harassed by a Delhi Police constable.

It also sought a compliance report from the Chief Secretary along with proof of payment.

The commission directed the government that the money be put into a fixed deposit in the victim's name, the interest from which her legal guardian would be authorised to use for her welfare while she is a minor.

The principal, together with any accrued interest, would be at her disposal when she becomes an adult, it said.

"Prima-facie, a public servant had abused his position and violated the human rights of a minor girl for which the State is liable," the panel observed.

The NHRC issued show cause notices to the Delhi government through its chief secretary and the Delhi Police commissioner and also asked them to inform about further action against the constable.
