NEW DELHI: The Opposition INDIA bloc, in a joint statement, has condemned the police raids on journalists of NewsClick.

“The INDIA parties strongly condemn the BJP government’s fresh attack on the media. We steadfastly stand with the media and for the constitutionally protected freedoms of speech and expression,” the opposition bloc said.

“In the last nine years, the BJP government has deliberately persecuted and suppressed the media by deploying investigative agencies to suppress the BBC, Newslaundry, Dainik Bhaskar, Bharat Samachar, Kashmir Walla, Wire, etc, and most recently the journalists of NewsClick”, it further said.

The joint statement came when the Congress had limited its official response to a spokesperson tweeting to term the raids as an attempt to divert focus away from the Bihar caste survey. Later, it is learnt, some INDIA bloc parties lobbied for the alliance issuing a joint statement.
