New Year bashes may not be so merry this time
Partygoers in the capital, who plan to usher in the New Year with a big bang, may not find enough venues to celebrate because of restrictions imposed on playing music in the city's hotels and pubs.
The Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL), an apex-licensing arm of Indian Music Industry (IMI), has served legal notices to all hotels and pubs that have not paid up the requisite license fee to play music at their year-end bashes.
"Action will be taken against them if in case they fail to pay up. The defaulters list this year includes some of the top venues like Decibel, Nirula's, City Park Hotels, Delhi's Devils, V3S mall, Lovely Obsession and Splash Hotels, Parikrama, RPM and several others.
PPL has issued notices to all the key cities across the country," an IMI official said.
According to IMI reports, pubs and hotels rake in huge profits every year but are unwilling to pay the nominal tariff of Rs 40,000 onwards (which varies depending on the number of hours for which music is played) to PPL and thus flout the norms and eating into the royalties of performers and artists.
