KANPUR: Aiming at checking corruption and speed up the process of issuing passports for students of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, district police have asked the institute director to appoint a nodal officer to oversee the procedure.

The nodal officer would assist the local intelligence department officer and a sub-inspector in verification work of applications submitted by the students, Superintendent of Police S P Mishra said here on Thursday.

Starting next week, students would submit their passport applications forms from Monday to Thursday, he said adding that on Friday these would be sent to the passport department in Lucknow.

The new procedure has been put in place after the IIT students complained of corruption in the passport-issuing process, he said.

Mishra said that acting on an email sent by IIT Kanpur students, President A P J Abdul Kalam had directed the state government to conduct a probe into the matter.

Subsequently, five policemen and a civilian acting as a middleman had been found guilty in a probe conducted by senior superintendent of police P C Meena.
