New Delhi lets China know its displeasure

India expressed disappointment with China's last ditch attempt to derail the NSG waiver during Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechi’s meeting with Pranab Mukherjee on Monday.

NEW DELHI: India expressed disappointment with Chinas last ditch attempt to derail the NSG waiver during Chinese foreign minister Yang Jiechis meeting with external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday. Mr Mukherjee is understood to have conveyed New Delhis disappointment to Mr Yang on the matter.

The issue also figured during Mr Yangs call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. During both meetings, the Chinese foreign minister is understood to have highlighted Beijings continued interest in fostering a strategic relationship with India and played down. National security advisor MK Narayanan had warned on Sunday that New Delhi would take up the issue during Mr Yangs visit to India.

Mr Yang, however, attempted to deflect the criticism that the Chinese NSG position has invited saying Beijing played constructive and responsible role and worked for consensus in the NSG. We worked for consensus in the NSG. We have been a responsible player, Mr Yang said after talks with Mr Mukherjee. He further maintained that China had played a constructive role in the IAEA also.

Ahead of the meeting between the two foreign ministers, Beijing made an attempt to explain its reasons for seeking more time for the NSG waiver through a Chinese foreign ministry statement that was also released by the Chinese embassy here.

Through the statement China tried to duck criticism for trying to throw sand in Indias NSG gears by saying its role in the nuclear cartels meeting was constructive. Beijing put the friendly foot forward a day after its efforts to ensure a same place for its proliferation partner Pakistan evoked criticism from all sides. China has been taking part in relevant meetings within the NSG in a responsible and constructive manner, the Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement.

The statement, which welcomed the NSG granting a waiver to India to engage in nuclear commerce, said on September 6 the NSG discussed nuclear cooperation with India and issued a statement on the basis of negotiated consensus, deciding to lift nuclear trade ban on the country. China, which had earlier given to India signals of positive cooperation in the NSG, tried to sabotage Indias case in Vienna by joining holdout countries. India had expressed its unhappiness over Beijings role.
