Nepalese climber Min Bahadur Serchan, 77, today became the oldest person to summit the world's highest peak Mount Everest breaking the previous record set by a Japanese mountaineer.

KATHMANDU: Nepalese climber Min Bahadur Serchan, 77, today became the oldest person to summit the world's highest peak Mount Everest breaking the previous record set by a Japanese mountaineer.

"Sherchan reached the top of Everest on Sunday morning," said Ramesh K. C., an official at Nepal's Tourism Ministry.

"Sherchan is in good health and is gradually descending from the summit, he said.

Serchan broke the previous record held by Japanese schoolteacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa, 71, who scaled Everest last year.

A guide, 48-year-old Appa Sherpa, last week broke his own world record by reaching Mount Everest for the 18th time.

Since it was first scaled in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the peak has been summitted more than 3,000 times.
