Nepal has sounded a high-alert against the possible spread of the deadly bird flu virus that has been detected in the neighbouring Indian state of West Bengal.

KATHMANDU: Nepal has sounded a high-alert against the possible spread of the deadly bird flu virus that has been detected in the neighbouring Indian state of West Bengal.

Nepal has already banned the import of poultry from India to check the spread of the disease. Although no bird flu has been detected in Nepal, the government has remained on high-alert as the bordering Indian state of West Bengal has been affected by the outbreak of the flu, said a statement issued by the ministries of Health and Population and Agriculture and Cooperatives.

The government has been adopting various measures, including testing samples of poultry products collected from different districts, but no symptom of bird flu was found so far, the statement said.

The government has also embarked on a programme to alert the general public against the outbreak of the virus through radio, television, newspapers, poster, pamphlet and sticker.

Nepal's Health Ministry has asked the people not to come into close contact with sick birds and animals.
