KATMANDU: Officials say Nepal's prime minister has asked former communist rebel leaders to form a new coalition government after they won last month's election for a constitution-drafting assembly.

Peace Minister Ram Chandra Poudel says the former rebels, formally known as Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists), were asked by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala at a meeting Saturday to ``go ahead and make the new government.''

It has not been decided when Koirala will step down and the Maoist-led government will take over.

The Constituent Assembly meets May 28 for the first time and is expected to begin work by abolishing the Himalayan nation's centuries-old monarchy.
