Nepal EC announces poll schedule
Nepal's Election Commission announces schedule for the November 22 polls.
Candidates who wish to contest for the 240 seat Assembly through first-past-the-post or direct voting system need to file their nomination papers on October five, EC officials said.
The EC has announced two separate schedules for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) and proportional electoral systems, as per the Constitution.
The final list of the candidates will be released on October 10 and the candidates will be allotted their election symbol on October 11, according to officials.
Under the proportional electoral system, political parties must submit an enclosed list of candidates on September 30. The final list will be released on November 2, when the election symbols will also be distributed.
Under the direct voting system each candidate will have 39 days for the election campaign and under the proportionate or parallel system they will have 17 days for canvassing.
The Commission has also finalized the Election Code of Conduct which allows a candidate to incur campaign expenditure upto NRs. 459,000 under FPTP system and Rs. 50,000 under proportional system.
Any candidate violating the expenditure ceiling, will be fined NRs One lakh. The EC has also prohibited publication of any kind of survey regarding the election before the polls.
The Constituent Assembly will rewrite the Constitution and decide the fate of the monarchy. The polls are part of a peace deal between the government and Maoists who joined the country's unity government early this year.
