Mufti Waseem Ahmad Khan, chairman of Darul Uloom Trinidad, said this while delivering the keynote address at a seminar on 'dialogue among religions' organised by Department of Sunni Theology at Aligarh Muslim University yesterday.
"All religions teach peace but it is a tragedy that in today's modern world innocent people are being killed in the name of religion.
"If peace is to reign in today's troubled world then religious leaders of different faiths have to come together for initiating a dialogue for peace. There can be no lasting peace without involving religious leaders," he said
Delivering the Presidential Address, AMU Vice-Chancellor (Retd) Lt General Zameeruddin Shah said Muslims all over the world should take the initiative to remove misunderstandings between people of different faiths.
"Violence can never provide a permanent solution to society's problems," he said.
Shah said that the AMU was ready to play a key role in initiating a dialogue for removal of mutual misunderstandings and promoting national integration in the country.
Department of Sunni Theology's chairman Mufti Zahid Ali Khan said a peace initiative was imperative today because the world is witnessing a "proliferation of hate propaganda which has to be effectively countered".
