NE chief ministers to protest against DONER abolition
North eastern states chief ministers are likely to pass a resolution to protest the proposed move to abolish the union DONER ministry when they meet at Agartala on May 12.
With state governments of other NE states already voicing their concern, Meghalaya chief minister Donkupar Roy has joined them saying "The Meghalaya government does not support the Centre's reported move to do away with the ministry."
"The DONER ministry has played an important role in the development of infrastructre of the north-east. Meghalaya would not like to see the DONER ministry abolished. Infact NE wanted the ministry to be strengthened," Roy said.
He said the NE chief ministers would hold a conclave on May 21 at Agartala and jointly pass a resolution to register their protest.
The Administrative Reforms Commission on March 17 favoured the abolition of the union DONER ministry. The commission, headed by Verrappa Moily, recommended that the responsibilities of development of the region, including infrastructure and utilization of non-lapsable fund should be restored to subject matter ministries with ministry of home affairs acting as the nodal agency.
