NDMC’s decision to repaint dividers pink & green a safety hazard: Meenakshi Lekhi

Coming down heavily on New Delhi Municipal Council’s ( NDMC) decision to repaint kerbs, traffic dividers and roundabouts pink and green, Member of Parliament for Delhi Meenakshi Lekhi on Wednesday said the move was a safety hazard and lacked logic.

“I have recently written to NDMC on the safety hazard behind such a move but on the contrary they are busy painting the street side pink and green. I am very worried because the fog is going to set in soon in Delhi and the kerbs and dividers would not be visible. I have written a letter to NDMC but there has been no response to it,” said Lekhi.

NDMC has been drawing flak from various experts and individuals for showing disregard to international traffic guidelines and repainting the kerbs, traffic dividers and roundabouts pink and green. Recently the Council said in a statement the Pink depicted the heritage of Delhi while Green was chosen to depict the greenery in the area.

“There is scientific reason as to why the kerbs are painted yellow and black or white, yellow and black. If there is a scientific reason, why should aesthetics suddenly take prominence? The colours have to be visible and pink and green is a problem for people suffering from colour blindness,” said Lekhi.

Speaking at an event on Road Safety hosted by PVR Nest, Lekhi said she had spoken to the Minister for Road and Transport Nitin Gadkari on the issue and hope to get it sorted soon. “When you take all facts together you would prefer logic to beauty. It is important that we use our brains in the right direction and that you plan things and secure peoples life,” said Lekhi.
