NEW DELHI: The horticulture department of New Delhi Municipal Council, known for its magnificent avenues and gardens, on Saturday sent its field officials to attend a four-day programme on greenery planning and management organised by the Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology of the National Parks Board in Singapore.

The officials will be trained in use of equipment and technique and will be acquainted with the best horticultural practices in landscaping in Singapore. The programme also includes lectures on park maintenance, streetscape management, and field visits to iconic gardens and parks like Gardens By the Bay, National Orchid Garden, Southern Ridges and Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserves. The team includes three assistant directors, two section officers, nine supervisors and nine gardeners.

Gardens by the Bay is a nature park spanning 101 hectares of reclaimed land in central Singapore, adjacent to the Marina Reservoir. The National Orchid Garden is located on the highest hill in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It has 60,000 orchid plants of 1,000 species and more than 2,000 hybrids.

The horticulture department looks after more than 980 parks of CPWD colonies, 124 NDMC parks, 50 roundabouts and lawns of North Avenue, South Avenue, greens around Rashtrapati Bhawan, and Parliament House. It also maintains green strips of 137 roads.
