NDFB abducts NHPC official Anil Kumar Agarwal

GUWAHATI: What has sent the power developers in tizzy, suspected cadres of the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland ( NDFB) has abducted a senior official of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation ( NHPC) from Sonitpur district in Assam-Arunachal Pradesh Border.


The incident took place on Saturday. Anil Kumar Agarwal was posted as General Manager in the NHPC’s 800 MW power project in Tawang in Arunchal Pradesh. The incident took when the NHPC official was on his way to Tezpur in Assam from Tawang.

Police suspect the role of NDFB faction in the incident. Police sources added that the faction has substantial presence in the area. There is no ransom demand so far. “The official was whisked away by four motorcycles borne youths.

Anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) under IK Songbijit has launched massive extortion drive along the border areas. The centre has recently warned of launching offensive against the outfit.

An NHPC spokesman confirmed the abduction. This has sent shock waves as NHPC is engaged in several projects in the region. “Our people are concerned about the security."

NHPC’s 2000MW Lower Subansari hydro electric project in Assam-Arunachal is caught in logjam and work in the site has come to halt since December 2011. The project is facing opposition from anti dam groups.

Arunachal Pradesh inked not less than 140 MoUs for hydro-electric projects. Around 20,000 MW of power projects is in various stages of clearance and implementation.
