NCP to go solo in six municipal seats

The NCP on Thursday said it would fight elections to six of the 10 municipal corporations in Maharashtra on its own, but put the onus on the Congress for forming an alliance in the remaining four.

MUMBAI: The NCP on Thursday said it would fight elections to six of the 10 municipal corporations in Maharashtra on its own, but put the onus on the Congress for forming an alliance in the remaining four.

“We are still in talks with the Congress for alliance in Mumbai, Thane, Akola and Nasik municipal corporations. However, as far as the other six corporations — Pune, Nagpur, Ulhasnagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur and Amravati are concerned, we will fight them on our own,” party spokesperson Madan Bafna told reporters here. “It is now up to the Congress if they want to form an alliance in the remaining four corporations.”

Talks with them for the six polls did not elicit much of a response. Although we are still in talks with them for the four remaining seats, we are fully prepared to fight the polls on our own strength,” he said.

Sources in the party also said that tomorrow would be the last day for any talk with Congress on an alliance in Mumbai, Thane, Nasik and Akola polls. “We are waiting for a signal from them, but if they continue to underestimate our presence, especially in Mumbai, there is no hope of any alliance,” sources said.

“We are pressing for around 75 of the 227 seats, but they have not agreed. Both sides have reached a stalemate,” sources said. Bafna ruled out any alliance with the Third Front in Mumbai, saying “If we have to fight Mumbai without Congress, we will do so alone. There will be no alliance with RPI or any third front.”
