NCERT replaces book on Buddha by Nehru's 'Discovery of India'
The NCERT has replaced a book on the life and activity of Gautam Buddha with Jawaharlal Nehru's 'Discovery of India'.
The apex body preparing the textbooks of schools has recently made this move with approval of the government appointed national monitoring committee and the textbook committee.
The book 'Buddha Charita', a biography of Buddha by Ashva Ghosh, has been dropped from Class-VIII Hindi curriculum. Nehru's book 'Bharat ek Khoj' has been prescribed in its place, a senior NCERT official told the media.
"This has been done as per the National Curriculum Framework. The new book also contains a 12-page chapter on Buddha and also gives a comprehensive picture about the country, its past, heritage, culture and many other things," he said.
The Buddha Charita was dealing with only one personality -Buddha. However, the new book gives information about many eminent personalities including Ashoka and Chanakya, he said.
"This is a good decision," he said. However, certain organisations have threatened to oppose the decision of NCERT. All India Federation of SC/ST organisations has said it would move the HRD ministry on the issue.
