NCBC to review income criterion for creamy layer among OBCs

The National Commission for Backward Classes has been asked to review the existing income criterion used for determining the creamy layer among the OBCs.

NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Backward Classes has been asked to review the existing income criterion used for determining the creamy layer among the OBCs, Government said on Monday.

In a written reply in Rajya Sabha, Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh said the Commission has been entrusted with the task of reviewing the existing criterion by the Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry.

To another question, he said the Government has issued directions to Central educational institutions to implement 27 per cent quota for OBCs in admissions from the coming academic session.

In reply to a question on Indian Institutes of Information Technology, he said a proposal to set up new IIITs under public-private partnership (PPP) mode is under the consideration of the government.

To a separate question, he said the government has asked Central universities to examine the desirability of increasing the retirement age of Vice-Chancellors in view of enhancement in the age of superannuation of teachers.

"Some of the Central Universities have since amended the relevant statutes, with the approval of the Visitor, to increase the age of retirement of their Vice-Chancellors to 70 years," he said.
