Navjot Singh Sidhu’s job cut out as key campaigner for AAP

NEW DELHI: Navjot Singh Sidhu will perform the role of chief campaigner for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) during the assembly election campaign in Punjab once he joins it “in two-three days”, party leaders told ET on Tuesday.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal confirmed Sidhu won’t be projected as party’s chief ministerial candidate in the Punjab polls next year by saying , “Aisa kuch nahi hai.”

Party leaders said he will be the prominent face of the campaign and his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu will also join AAP soon. “The exact designation has not been named yet, but Sidhu will be like a chief pracharak (campaigner) for Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab once he joins us in two-three days. We are in daily communication with him,” said a source.

Further, he said Sidhu will not be the chief ministerial candidate and AAP will take a call on whether to declare one “at the right time”. Speculation peaked Tuesday when the former BJP MP’s wife told reporters in Amritsar that she had not resigned but Siddhu had and he was yet to join AAP, though that is most likely to happen.

Speaking with ET, AAP’s Punjab-in-charge Sanjay Singh said, “Both Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife will be joining the AAP soon. They will join us without any pre-condition.”

AAP’s Punjab MP Bhagwant Mann sought to quell speculation surrounding possible friction in the party. He told reporters, “Everybody will unanimously support party’s choice of the chief ministerial candidate. There is no competition in the party for posts.”
