Naveen seeks Rs 1,500 cr from Centre for flood-hit Orissa

Orissa government on Saturday asked the Centre to declare it as a national disaster and immediately release Rs 1,500 crore as assistance from National Calamity Contingency Fund.

BHUBANESWAR: Terming the flood situation in the state as "very grim", Orissa government on Saturday asked the Centre to declare it as a "national disaster" and immediately release Rs 1,500 crore as assistance from National Calamity Contingency Fund (NCCF), official sources said.

In a letter to the prime minister, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the state had suffered a loss of nearly Rs 2500 crore according to a preliminary assessment.

The state urgently required Rs 1500 crore for immediate relief and rehabilitation, he said.

Patnaik sent the letter to the PM after making an aerial survey of the prevailing flood situation in Khurda, Puri, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts.

The chief minister also announced a seven-day relief for over 15 lakh affected people in 17 districts.

Describing the gravity of the recent flood as "very grim", Patnaik said the state was prone to all kinds of natural calamities like flood, cyclone and heatwave. The state's economic development was badly hit by the calamities.

The state government has been working on a war footing to rescue people and provide flood relief, he said.
