Naveen announces land for families of slain jawans
Four days after the killing of 17 policemen in a landmine blast by Maoists in Malkangiri, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced land for families of slain jawans and plans to modernise the force to effectively fight the ultras.
In bid to boost sagging morale of police personnel after the ghastly incident of July 16, Patnaik visited the district headquarter town to review the situation and handed over cheques for Rs four lakh each to the families of the 17 police personnel killed in the attack as ex-gratia.
The chief minister, who interacted with members of the bereaved families and paid tributes to the slain jawans at the martyrs' pillar, said plots would be provided to each family for building houses also.
Promising all necessary facilities to police personnel whose association has sought among other things special allowance for those deployed in the naxal-hit district, he said decision about various welfare measures would be taken at a high-level meeting in about five days.
Seeking to instill confidence in police, Patnaik said manpower shortage in the force would be removed through fresh recruitment while its fighting teeth would be sharpened by inducting modern and sophisticated weapons and gadgets.
At the same time, concrete steps would be taken to accelerate developmental work in the tribal dominated backward district to check Maoist influence.
Protesting the Chief Minister's visit four days after the incident, Congress workers staged a demonstration raising anti-government slogans, police sources said adding 20 of them were taken into custody.
