Centre is holding a day-long national conference on Sept 9 to lay more importance on statistical activities in public administration and policy initiatives.

NEW DELHI: To impress upon states and Union Territories to lay more importance on statistical activities in public administration and policy initiatives, Centre is holding a day-long national conference on September 9.

The 'National Conference of Ministers In-charge of Statistics of States/UTs', organised by Statistics and Programme Implementation, would be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

This conference, to be held on the national capital, would be significant from national perspective especially under globalisation when demand for sub-national data is gaining importance for policy analysis, both regarding removal of poverty and enhancing economic growth, it said.

Issues like giving independence and impartiality to official statistics to improve credibility, for strengthening state statistical system would be deliberated at the conference, an official release said.

Other issues to be taken up in the conference are improving horizontal and vertical coordination of statistical activities across departments and development of local panchayati raj level statistics and its integration with the state statistical system, it said.

Ministers in-charge of statistics of states/UTs principal secretaries (planning), chairman and members of National statistical Commission among others would attend the conference.
