Narendra Modi's sartorial sense: Takes from top fashion designers
We all are familiar with red carpets our divas glide on at Cannes. Every day, their gowns become the fodder of discussion among the fashionistas and are dissected in celebrity columns. But what exactly happens when our prime minister goes on his first big visit and meets many heads of state every day. The red carpet, of course, is there. But do his clothes suit the occasion? Modi has made a remarkable departure from his predecessor Manmohan Singh’s dour style of dressing. ET spoke to country’s top fashion designers to know where Modi got it right and where he took a misstep.

Narendra Kumar

Modi has cultivated himself really well from the beginning of his campaign to now. His colour pallette has evolved over a period of time. Earlier there was a lot of orange to reach out to his constituency and the look was more rustic. Now, the choice of clothes is more urban and business oriented. His look and choice of colours for instance in Brazil was neutral. Since he is now engaging with a new community, he has to be dressed neutral instead of being seen far too left or far too right. He is doing well for himself!

It is quite fortunate to have a Prime Minister who is experimental with colours, from crimson red to powder blue. He is doing it right and one can definitely see an effort being made in his clothes and overall dressing. It was interesting to see the ‘khakhi’ bandgala suit he wore in Brazil, instead of the going for the usual blues, blacks and greys. It was refreshing. He is on the right track, but professional advice could do wonders. For example, when it comes to the cut and fitting of the suits he wears, a professional designer could work around it better to suit his body type and proportions.

He is a total style icon and has developed an individual style on his own. His choice of kurtas, jackets and even the bandgalas he wore in Brazil is very chic. He is the Rajesh Khanna of 2000 generation!
