Nagpur today recorded the coldest day in nearly five decades with the mercury plunging to 5.1 degrees Celsius, the Regional Meteorological Centre here said.

NAGPUR: Nagpur today recorded the coldest day in nearly five decades with the mercury plunging to 5.1 degrees Celsius, the Regional Meteorological Centre here said.

Gondia, which was the coldest in the Vidarbha region yesterday with 6.5 degrees Celsius, today saw the mercury further plummet by one notch to reach 5.5 degrees Celsius.

Though the entire Vidarbha region had been experiencing extreme cold for the past three days, there was slight rise in temperatures at some places but there was no respite from cold breeze, the MET department said.

Nagpur had recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius on Jan 10 last year, but today's low of 5.1 degrees Celsius is the lowest in nearly five decades, it said.

Other places in Vidarbha region which recorded low temperature include Akola (9.5 degrees Celsius), Amravati (9.4 degrees Celsius), Bramhapuri 11.2 (degrees Celsius), Chandrapur (9.2 degrees Celsius), Gondia (5.5 degrees Celsius), Wardha (7.4 degrees Celsius) and Yavatmal (10 degrees Celsius).

The cold wave is likely to remain for some time, the weatherman said.
