Guwahati: Nagaland will hold an election to the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) with 33 percent seat reservation for women on May 16. Nagaland chief minister N Rio has also appointed 24 MLAs as advisers to various departments.

The Supreme Court intervened in holding the elections. State Election Commissioner, T Mhabemo Yanthan said that elections will be held for three municipal councils and 36 town councils.

In the 2017 election to these bodies with reservation was opposed by several groups. They opposed it on grounds that it infringed the special provisions granted to Nagaland under Article 371(A) of the Constitution.


In the violence and series of vandalism and arson two people were killed while large scale damage to government properties took place. Then chief minister T R Zeliang had to resign.

The SEC notification informed that the period for filing of Nomination would be held from April 3-10. A consolidated list of nominations would be notified on April 11, which would be followed by the scrutiny of nomination papers on April 12-13.

Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio allocated portfolios to his ministers. Rio has also appointed 24 MLAs as advisers to various departments.

Rio has kept finance, personal and administrative reforms, all important police issues and all other portfolios not allotted any minister while Y Patton got home and border affairs and TR Zeliang has been given planning and transformation. Patton and Zeliang are deputy chief ministers in the Rio ministry.

Roads and bridges has gone to G Kaitio Aye, public health engineering and cooperation to Jacob Zhimomi, power and parliamentary affairs to KG Kenye, health and family welfare to P Paiwang Konyak, rural development and State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD) to Metsubo Jamir, tourism and higher education to Temjen Imna Along, forest, environment and climate change and village guards to CL John, women resource development and horticulture to Salhoutuonuo Kruse and housing and mechanical engineering to P Bashangmongba Chang.
