N Srinivasan can in no way contest BCCI polls: Experts
NEW DELHI: Former BCCI president N Srinivasan may not be able to contest again for the top post of Board of Control for Cricket in India even if he gives up his commercial interest in IPL team Chennai Super Kings, owned by India Cements, of which he is both vice chairman and managing director, legal experts told ET while interpreting last week's Supreme Court ruling which barred Srinivasan from the next round of elections to the sports body.

In any case, an expert said on condition of anonymity, Srinivasan will not be able to contest for the six months as he as to await the decision of the court-appointed high-powered committee, which will decide the fate of his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and Chennai Super Kings over Meiyappan’s alleged involvement in betting.

If the committee punishes Meiyappan and the team, Srinivasan may automatically stand indicted and disqualified from contesting in future elections, the expert said. The apex court slammed Srinivasan for having a commercial interest in an IPL franchisee, saying this was at odds with his responsibilities as the board chief, as it struck down a clause in the BCCI rules which allowed office-bearers to have commercial interests in the game.
