The Puducherry territorial assembly had adopted a resolution urging the Centre to grant statehood for Puducherry last September.

NEW DELHI: Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy today met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and raised the long pending demand of statehood for the Union territory.

"We have sought statehood status for Puducherry," Rangasamy said after meeting the Prime Minister here.

The Puducherry territorial assembly had adopted a resolution urging the Centre to grant statehood for Puducherry last September.

Rangasamy also said that he had invited Modi for laying the foundation stone for the new Assembly complex in Puducherry.

"A new assembly has to be built," Rangasamy said, adding that the venue for the Assembly premises would be identified soon.
