SRINAGAR: A day after militant attack in Udhampur, there was an exchange of fire in Basantgarh area of the same district on Thursday night, which continued till the wee hours on Friday. Police claimed that it was not a militant attack that led to a four-hour firing but did not have any details of what happened. Special police officer Gul Muhammad was injured in the firing and was airlifted to Udhampur on Friday morning.

There is a police post in Sang area of Basantgarh, where around eight SPOs are posted, apart from 42 armed Village Defence Committee members in the area. “There was no militant movement in the area. There has been some confusion that led to the firing. It could even be an intergroup rivalry or something else,” inspector-general of Jammu division, Danish Rana, told ET. The police was also investigating whether there was any malicious plot.

The firing started at around 9:30 pm on Thursday and both SPOs and VDC members continued firing till 1:30 am. Basantgarh, around 130km from Udhampur towards Kathua border, is inaccessible and has no road connectivity.
